Mills on the Water of Leith
- James Inglis and Co: This mill which specialised in Boards, wrappers and crayon papers began operation in 1889. For most of the twentieth century it was owned by the Williamson family until 1987 when it was taken over by Stirling Fibre. When it closed in 1989 Inglis Mill was the last papermill in operation on the Water of Leith.
- Canonmills: 1659 the mill was visited by Edinburgh dignitaries. 1681 Peter Bruce has manufactory of playing card manufactory. 1682 Appointed Kings Printer. Persecuted and gave up mill.
- Dalry: 1594 Mill given an 11 year lease. No further records until 1675 when Alex Daes took over mill. The business failed and is now part of Dalry House.
- Lumsdaine’s / Jinkabout Mill: 1506 – 1714 Corn mill. 1714 – 1737 Papermill. 1737 – 1755 Barley Mill
- Bog’s / Vernours Mill: 1598 waulk mill. 1717 – 1787 papermill. 1816 – 1924 snuff, grain and spice mill. 1924 mill burned down.
- Kate’s Mill: 1518 – 1783 waulk mill. 1783 – 1890 papermill.
- Redhall Mill: 1718 – 1742 papermill. 1742 converted to a barley mill.
- Kirkland Mill: 1585 Mansion House. 1777 lint mill. 1825 meal mill. 1846 snuff mill. 1870 board mill.
- West Mill: 1688 mill undertaking 3 production activities of waulk, grain and flax. 1799 Grain and paper mill. 1909 – 1971 grain and paper mill.
- Mossy Mill: 1664 waulk mill. 1838 – 1972 papermill.
- Upper Spylaw: 1682 – 1765 papermill. 1765 – 1880 snuff mill. 1880 Dalry.
- Woodhall Mill: 1677 waulk mill on site. 1799 lint mill. 1792 papermill. 1845 brown mill. 1957 converted to a board mill. Closed in 1984.
- Kinleith Mill: 1618 mill on site, no record of purpose. 1792 papermill. 1830 first machine installed. 1844 Mill bought by Henry Bruce. 1928 Absorbed into Inveresk, producing featherweights. 1966 mill closed by Inveresk, due to rationalisation process.
- Balerno papermill: 1770 mill founded on site. 1832 Browns and Cartridges made on site. 1875 mill burned down. 1897 used as store. 1904 glueworks. 1913 Tannery.
- Byrnie Mill: 1799 papermill making tea and grey paper. 1905 Sawmill.
- Balerno Bank / John Galloway and Sons: 1805 papermill making tea, grey paper and printings. 1909 mill burned down, rebuilt and reopened in 1912. 1925 bought by John Galloway. Mill making high quality art paper. Closed 1971.
