By the start of the nineteenth century many working in the industry were beginning to experiment with mechanisation. The introduction of machinery into papermaking revolutionised a process that was labour-intensive and prone to inaccuracy in a similar manner to changes brought about more generally in manufacturing by the Industrial Revolution.
