Beating paper The Start of Mechanisation By the seventeenth century the process of papermaking began to undergo change. New machinery was developed that made the process of mass producing paper much easier. One of these machines, the "Hollander," invented in Holland as the name suggests, replaced the stamping machines in mills. The Hollander beater had the ability to quickly reduce rags to a smooth even pulp. This new machine allowed paper mills to produce 50 to 100 times more pulp than the stampers
